Hancock County, Iowa Overview

Hancock County is a county in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,341, and the largest community and county seat is Garner. The county was established in 1851 and named for the leaders of the Continental Congress during the American Revolution, John Hancock. A total of 573 square miles defines the county lines, 571 of which is land and the remaining two are water. The county is bordered by four other Iowa counties: Winnebago to the north, Cerro Gordo to the east, Wright to the south and Kossuth to the west. As of December 2008, the unemployment rate in Hancock County was 9.1%, a notable increase from 4.0% in December 2007. The largest zip code in the county is 50438, one of 13 total zip codes used in Hancock county.
