Guthrie County, Iowa Overview

Guthrie County, Iowa, established in 1851, had a population of 10,954 as of the 2010 census. Guthrie Center is the both the largest community and county seat. The county was named after Captain Edwin B. Guthrie, who had died in the Mexican–American War. The county has a total area of 593 square miles, 591 of which is land and the remaining 2 square miles are water. Adjacent Iowa counties are: Greene to the north, Dallas to the east, Adair to the south, Audubon to the west and Carroll to the northwest. In 1983, the Iowa State Legislature approved the Court Reorganization Act, transferring the expense of operating the court system to the State of Iowa.
