Dubuque County, Iowa Overview

Dubuque County, IA had a population of 93,653 as of the 2010 census. Dubuque is both the county seat and the largest community. Established in 1834, the county was named for the first European settler in the state, Julien Dubuque. Today, the county has record employment levels and an ever-growing population. The surging economy can especially be seen in the West Side of the City of Dubuque, and in neighboring Peosta and Asbury. These areas have expanded so much that concerns now lie with trying to manage the growth, a sharp change from just 20 years ago. Dubuque County is one of Iowa’s two original counties along with Des Moines County; both were organized by the Michigan Territorial legislature in 1834. The city of Dubuque was chartered in 1833 as the first city in Iowa. The county borders on both Illinois and Wisconsin, and is bounded on the northeast by the Mississippi River. Adjacent Iowa counties are: Clayton to the north, Jackson to the southeast, Jones to the southwest, and Delaware to the west. Grant County, Wisconsin lies to the northeast, an Jo Daviess County, Illinois to the east. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 617 square miles, of which 608 square miles is land and 8.3 square miles is water. The county is drained by north and south forks of the Maquoketa River. Portions of the nationally protected Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge and the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge lie within the county lines. Zip code 52001 is the largest in the county; however, 18 additional zip codes are used in the area.
