Dallas County, Iowa Overview

Dallas County, located in Iowa, had a population of 66,135 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Adel; however, Waukee is the largest community. The county was named for George M. Dallas, Vice President of the United States under James K. Polk, the namesake of neighboring Polk County. The land that now forms Dallas County was ceded by the Sac and Fox nation to the United States in a treaty signed on October 11, 1842, and the county was formed in 1846. The total area of the county is 588 square miles, plus 4 square miles of water. In addition to Polk County as noted above, and borders to the east, other neighbors include: Boone County, IA to the north, Madison County, IA to the south, Guthrie County, IA to the west, and Greene County, IA to the northwest. With a total of 25 zip codes in use in the county, 50263 is the largest.
