Clayton County, Iowa Overview

Clayton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,129. The county seat is Elkader; however, Guttenberg is the largest community. The county was established in 1837 and named in honor of John M. Clayton, who was a United States Senator from Delaware and later Secretary of State under President Zachary Taylor. The county has two neighboring counties in Wisconsin, Crawford to the northeast, and Grant to the east. Remaining border counties are all in Iowa and are: Allamakee to the north, Dubuque to the southeast, Delaware to the south, Buchanan to the southwest, and Fayette to the west. Fourteen square miles of area is water, plus 779 square miles of land, makes it the fifth largest county by area in the state. It currently takes 22 zip codes to cover the total county, and the largest of those is 52052.
