Established in 1837 and named for James Buchanan, the 15th POTUS, Buchanan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,958, its largest community and county seat is Independence. The county covers a total of 573 square miles, 571 of which is land, and the remaining 2 square miles are water. The county is surrounded by other Iowa counties including: Clayton to the northeast, Fayette to the north, Delaware to the east, Linn to the southeast, Benton to the southwest, Black Hawk to the west and Bremer to the northwest.
