Black Hawk County, Iowa Overview

Black Hawk County is in the northeast corner of Iowa. As the fourth most populous county in the state, the population as of the 2010 census was 131,090. Black Hawk County was formed on February 17, 1843 from sections of Buchanan County. It was named after Black Hawk, a Sauk leader during the 1832 Black Hawk War. The largest community and county seat is Waterloo. The county is bordered on all sides by other Iowa counties: Fayette to the northeast, Butler to the northwest, Grundy to the west, Tama to the southwest, Benton to the southeast, Buchanan to the east and Bremer to the north. The county has a total area of 573 square miles, 566 of which is land and the remaining square miles is water. The county is separated by the Cedar River and much of the county is on the flood plain.
