Adair County, Iowa Overview

Adair County is in Iowa, and its population was 7,682, as of the 2010 census. The county seat, and largest community is Greenfield. Adair County was formed in 1851 from sections of Pottawattamie County. It was named for John Adair, a general in the War of 1812, and the eighth Governor of Kentucky. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 570 square miles, of which 569 square miles is land and 1.0 square mile is water. Adair is bordered by five adjacent Iowa counties: Guthrie to the north, Madison to the east, Union to the southeast, Adams to the southwest and Cass to the west.
