Jasper County, Iowa Overview
Established in 1846, Jasper County, Iowa was named for a Revolutionary War hero, Sergeant William Jasper. As of the 2010 census, the county population was 36,842. The county seat and largest community is Newton. Also, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 733 square miles, of which 730 square miles is land and 2.5 square miles is water. The North and South Skunk River flow through the county. Bodies of water include Lake Mariposa and Rock Creek. The county is bordered by six other Iowa counties: Marshall to the north, Poweshiek to the east, Mahaska to the southeast, Marion to the south, Polk to the west, Story to the northwest.
