Jackson County, Iowa Overview
Jackson County, IA established in 1837. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,848, and the county seat and largest community is Maquoketa. The county, named for President Andrew Jackson, has a total area of 650 square miles, 636 of which is land, with the remaining 14 square miles is water. The Mississippi River flows at the eastern border, as does portions of Illinois. Jackson county has two neighboring counties in Illinois, Jo Daviess to the northeast, and Carroll to the east. Three Iowa counties are also bordering Iowa county, and they are Dubuque to the north, Clinton to the south, and Jones to the west. The county is partially home to nationally protected Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge and the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. In addition, two state protected areas are within the county lines, the Maquoketa Caves State Park and Bellevue State Park. The county uses a total of 14 zip codes, the largest of which is 52060.
