Greene County, Iowa Overview

Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa, and as of the 2010 census, the population was 9,336. The largest community and county seat is Jefferson. Greene County was formed on January 15, 1851 and from 1854, self-governed. It was named after General Nathanael Greene, a hero in the Revolutionary War. The first settler was Truman Davis. He settled on the Raccoon River. The first courthouse was built in 1856 from wood. Previously court was held in a log cabin southeast of Jefferson. The second courthouse, of red brick, was built in 1870. The present Greene County Courthouse used today was built in 1917. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 571 square miles, of which 570 square miles is land and 1.6 square miles is water. The county has six neighboring Iowa counties: Calhoun to the northwest, Webster to the northeast, Boon to the east, Dallas to the southeast, Guthrie to the south, and Carroll to the west. The county is covered by a total of 12 zip codes, the largest of which is 50129.

The Clerk of District Court office:

  • Manages and maintains all trial court records, including pleadings, evidence and orders.
  • Accepts and processes fines, fees and court costs owed to the state, child support checks, and civil judgments owed to litigants.
  • Maintains a record of liens on all real estate in the county.
  • Helps with involuntary hospitalization cases.
  • Has the authority to dispose of scheduled violations which are not contested and do not require a court hearing.
