Rock Island County, Illinois

Rock Island County is located in northwest Illinois, along the Mississippi River. The population was 147,546, as of the 2010 census. The total area is 451 square miles. The county seat is Rock Island, but the largest city is Moline. Both the county and city of Rock Island are named for an island in the Mississippi River. The island is now known as Arsenal Island.

The Rock Island County Recorder is the official keeper of land records for Rock Island County. Records maintained by the recorder’s office date back to the mid-1800s. Instruments maintained by the recorder’s office include but are not limited to property liens, mortgages, deeds, releases and assignments, as well as assorted federal, state and local liens.  Other documents recorded by the office are corporation papers, veteran’s discharge papers, and instruments pertaining to the Uniform Commercial Code. Furthermore, the office of the county recorder is responsible for the recordation and storage of monument records, land surveys, and subdivision plats.

Records maintained by the county recorder can be obtained by visiting the recorder’s office in person, sending a request by mail, by phone, or submitting a request by fax.

Information which may be obtained by phone from the Recorder’s Office only includes filing of corporation papers in Rock Island County and filing of soldier’s discharge papers. When requesting information by fax, use (309) 558-3642. If a reply is requested by fax, you will be charged $1.00 for each page of copy and a $3.00 faxing fee, which must be paid in advance.

To obtain records in person, you will have to visit the Recorder’s office at Rock Island County Courthouse, Second Floor, 210 15th Street, Rock Island, IL 61201. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. You will be required to present a records request form. The form can also be mailed to the record’s office. When requesting information by mail:

  • Please enclose $5.00 for each copy requested.
  • There is no fee for information not requiring copies.
  • For requests of legal descriptions, they must be accompanied by $2.00 to cover the cost of a copy of the latest deed.
