Menard County is a county located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1839. Named after Pierre Menard, the first lieutenant governor of Illinois, the county seat is Petersburg and it has a population of 12607 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 315 square miles, with its land area encompassing 314 square miles, and its water area 1 square mile. Menard County Clerk Information
The Recorder’s Office handles various matters that include: deeds, mortgages, liens, etc., payroll and accounts payable, hunting and fishing licenses, raffle licenses, assumed name applications, elections and genealogy.
A request form for vital records is available for download at the County Clerk’s website. Birth records requests require the full name of the person whose birth record is requested, relationship of requestor to the record owner, date of birth, county, as well as parents’ names. Death records and marriage records requests require similar information.

Court Clerk Information
The Office of the Circuit Clerk files all new court cases; anything that goes through the court system. You may also access old records in the office, dating back to 1839. The Circuit Clerk’s Office also handles orders of protection in domestic violence cases and has a part time advocate to work with women and families in need. The office staff can handle all inquiries from the public, except those involving adoption and juvenile records which are confidential. Computerized records go back to 1994. Anything prior to that will require a physical search of printed records. The office also performs criminal background checks in response to written inquiries, fax inquiries or those who come to the office in person.
