McHenry County, Illinois
McHenry County is a county located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1836 out of Cook County and LaSalle County, and named after Major William McHenry, an Indian fighter who died in Vandalia in 1835. Its county seat is Woodstock, while Crystal Lake is the largest city in the county; other cities in the county include Harvard, Marengo, McHenry and Wonder Lake. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 308,760, making it the sixth-most populous county in Illinois. It has a total area of 611 square miles, of which 7.6 square miles is water and 603 square miles is land. McHenry County borders the following counties: Walworth County, Wisconsin, to the north; Kenosha County, Wisconsin, to the northeast; Lake County to the east; Cook County to the southeast; Kane County to the south; DeKalb County to the southwest; and Boone County to the west.
