Jackson County, Illinois

Jackson County is located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed on January 10, 1816, and named after President Andrew Jackson. Carbondale, home to the main campus of Southern Illinois University, is the largest and most populous city in the count,y while Murphysboro is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 60,218 people and a total area of 602 square miles, of which 18 square miles is water and 584 square miles is land. Jackson County borders the following counties: Perry County to the north, Franklin County to the northeast, Williamson County to the east, Union County to the southeast, Perry County, Missouri, to the west, and Randolph County to the northwest.

The Jackson County Clerk/Recorder is responsible for maintaining all records in the county. Some of the records maintained by the clerk’s office include deeds, mortgages, vital records (birth records, marriage records, and death records), releases/satisfactions, lis pendens, liens, military discharges, and plats.

The office of the clerk does not perform property record searches for the public. To obtain copies of recorded documents, you will have to visit the courthouse and perform your own search. All requests for document copies must be made by writing or in person; fax requests are not accepted. You may only request delivery of a document by mail if you know the document number or book and page number of the document you are requesting. When requesting copies of records by mail, you are required to include details of the document, a stamped, self-addressed envelope, and a fee of $0.50 per page. The fee increases to $1.50 per document if you would like copies faxed, and all fees must be paid in advance.

In order to obtain a marriage license in Jackson County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
