Grundy County, Illinois

Grundy County is located in northeastern Illinois. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Founded in 1841, it was named for Felix Grundy, U.S. Attorney General from 1838 to 1840. The population, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, was 50,063, and the total area is 430 square miles. The county seat is Morris.

The Grundy County Recorder’s Office acts as the county’s library for documents relating to the ownership of property. The county recorder’s office records documents and assigns them a unique Document Recording Number, and the recorded document is then entered into a county-wide database. The original document is returned to the owner, while copies of the document are stored on digital media. Records stored by the recorder’s office date back to as early as 1841. Records maintained by the recorder’s office include but are not limited to lis pendens, liens, judgments, UCCs, plats, vital records (birth records, marriage records, and death records), deeds, mortgages, assignments of mortgage, modifications, and releases/satisfactions.

Documents recorded by the recorder’s office are open to the public and can be accessed by doing a background check online, by mail, or by visiting the recorder’s office in person during office hours. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Grundy County Recorder Website. Online data and document images are from 1986 to present. Below are tips that might be helpful when doing a background check:

  • Search parameters include recorded data range, party name, and document type.
  • Documents from July 1986 to May 1994 are partially indexed by name.
  • Documents with complete indexing are from May 2, 1994 to current.
  • Please contact the office if you are unable to locate a document.
  • Use Internet Explorer.

For documents that cannot be accessed from the website, you will have to obtain them by visiting the recorder’s office in person. You will be required to submit a records request form; this form can be obtained from the recorder’s office or downloaded from the county website. Alternatively, you can call the county recorder at 815-941-3224 and make enquiries relating to public record.
