Fayette County, Illinois Overview

Fayette County is a county located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1821. Named after Marquis de LaFayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War, the county seat is Vandalia and it has a population of 22060 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 725 square miles, with its land area encompassing 716 square miles, and its water area 8.9 square miles. The county consists of 19 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 62471 recorded as the one with the largest population. Moreover, Fayette County borders the following counties: Marion County, Illinois to the south; Effingham County, Illinois to the east; Bond County, Illinois to the west; Shelby County, Illinois to the northeast; Montgomery County, Illinois to the northwest; Clinton County, Illinois to the southwest, and; Clay County, Illinois to the southeast.

Fayette County Clerk Information

The Fayette County Clerk and Recorder’s Office is responsible for:

  • Assumed names
  • Budgets and tax levees from local entities
  • Land Record Recordings (deeds, mortgages, surveys, etc.)
  • Certificates of taxes paid
  • Issuing marriage licenses
  • Maintaining birth, death and marriage records
  • Military discharges
  • Statements of economic interests
  • Elections
    • Certified Death Certificates are $19 for the 1st copy, and $10 for each additional copy. Certified Birth Certificates are $15 for the 1st copy, and $6 for each additional copy. Marriage Licenses are $50. For more information about what is required for application of a marriage license, you can call their office.
      Their land records are open for public viewing in their office. Records as old as the 1800’s can be found in our archives. The land records, beginning October 1, 2004, to present, can be viewed and printed online by accessing a link provided. Please be aware that you must enter a credit card before viewing, but will only be charged if you print. If you would like to become a subscriber for these services, a flat monthly or yearly fee will be charged, with a limited number of copies allowed.

      Court Clerk Information

      The Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court maintains the official records for the entire court system and is the official recorder of documents for filing. The Clerk of the Circuit Court certifies and prepares records on appeal when cases are appealed from the Circuit Court trial level to the Appellate Court. This office collects filing fees, fines, cost penalties, assessments and restitution, then distributes those monies on a monthly basis to the county, state, municipalities or proper recipients.

      Individuals who wish to view case files and documents in the Circuit Clerk’s Office may do so from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday, excluding legal holidays. (Holiday information, weather related scheduling and jury trial status is also available on the Fayette County Circuit Clerk’s Facebook page). Most court records are open to the public, with the exception of juvenile, adoption and impounded or sealed cases. For cases open to the public, information is also available on www.judici.com. Copies obtained from the Circuit Clerk’s office are $1 for the 1st page, $.50 for each of the next 19 pages and $.25 per page after that. Information emailed to you will be slightly higher, due to the research being done by the Circuit Clerk Deputies. Their office also offers a Public Access Computer for case related use by the general public.
