Union County, Illinois Overview

Union County is located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in January 2, 1818 and named after a joint revival meeting of the Baptists and Dunkards, called a “union meeting.” The county seat is Jonesboro. As of 2013, the county has a population of 17583. The county has a total area of 422 square miles, 413 square miles of which is land, and 8.7 square miles is water. The county consists of 13 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 62906 recorded as the one with the largest population. Union County borders the following counties: Jackson County, Illinois to the north; Alexander County, Illinois to the south; Johnson County, Illinois to the east; Cape Girardeau County, Missouri to the west; Williamson County, Illinois to the northeast; Perry County, Missouri to the northwest, and; Pulaski County, Illinois to the southeast.

Union County Clerk Information

The Union County Clerk serves as ex-officio Clerk of the County Board. The County Clerk records county board meeting minutes, resolutions and ordinances, maintains records and issues certificates of vital statistics, registers voters, conducts elections, registers notaries public, and registers assumed business names, as well as other duties. The County Clerk is responsible for recording and maintaining permanent, public record of all real estate transactions in Union County.

Court Clerk Information
The Union County Circuit Clerk is the keeper of the files and records of the Circuit Court. They work at the direction of the Circuit Court, Appellate Court and Supreme Court of Illinois. The Circuit Clerk process all documents in criminal and civil cases, summons jurors, handle costs, fines, restitution and support each year. The Union County Circuit Clerk also issue summons, writs, subpoenas and other documents mandated by the courts.
