Morgan County, Illinois Overview

Morgan County is a county located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1823. Named after General Daniel Morgan, who defeated the British at the Battle of Cowpens in the American Revolutionary War, the county seat is Jacksonville and it has a population of 35067 as of 2013. The county has a total area of 572 square miles, with its land area encompassing 569 square miles, and its water area 3.5 square miles. The county consists of 15 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 62650 recorded as the one with the largest population. Moreover, Morgan County borders the following counties: Cass County, Illinois to the north; Greene County, Illinois to the south; Sangamon County, Illinois to the east; Pike County and Scott County, Illinois to the west; Brown County, Illinois to the northwest, and; Macoupin County, Illinois to the southeast.

Morgan County Clerk Information

The County Clerk’s office has six main roles:

  • Chief Election Authority
  • Vital Records
  • Tax Extensions and Delinquent Taxes
  • Manager of Payroll, Accounts Receivable and Payable
  • Recorder of Deeds
  • Clerk to the County Board

Only specific individuals have the legal authorization to access birth, death and marriage certificates. Certificates will only be issued to those individuals. The request for a birth record must include the person’s name at birth, date of birth, and parents’ names (mother’s maiden name). Death and marriage records require similar information. The request must be signed by the applicant, include a valid phone number with area code and may only be mailed to those entitled to the copy. Please remember that the request must include a xerox copy of an acceptable form of current ID from the applicant.

Court Clerk Information

The Clerk of the Circuit Court is the official keeper of the records and the Seal of the Morgan County Circuit Court. The clerks shall attend the sessions of court, preserve all the files and papers thereof, make, keep, and preserve complete records of all the proceedings and determinations thereof, except in cases otherwise provided by law or the order of their courts respectively.
