McDonough County is located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1826 and named after Thomas Macdonough who defeated a British squadron in the decisive naval Battle of Lake Champlain in the War of 1812. The county seat is Macomb. As of 2013, the county has a population of 32464. The county has a total area of 590 square miles, 589 square miles of which is land, and 0.8 square miles is water. The county consists of 16 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 61455 recorded as the one with the largest population. McDonough County borders the following counties: Warren County, Illinois to the north; Schuyler County, Illinois to the south; Fulton County, Illinois to the east; Hancock County, Illinois to the west, and; Henderson County, Illinois to the northwest.
