Jo Daviess County, Illinois Overview

Jo Daviess County is located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1827 and named after Maj. Joseph Hamilton Daviess, United States District Attorney for Kentucky, who was killed in 1811 at the Battle of Tippecanoe. The county seat is Galena. As of 2013, the county has a population of 22407. The county has a total area of 619 square miles, 601 square miles of which is land, and 18 square miles is water. The county consists of 14 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 61036 recorded as the one with the largest population. Jo Daviess County borders the following counties: Lafayette County, Wisconsin to the north; Stephenson County, Illinois to the east; Dubuque County, Iowa to the west; Grant County, Wisconsin to the northwest; Jackson County, Iowa to the southwest, and; Carroll County, Illinois to the southeast.

Jo Daviess County Clerk Information

The County Clerk’s office has four major functions: (1) tax extender for computing tax rates and the redemption of delinquent taxes; (2) chief election officer for the County; (3) keeper of the County records and (4) Clerk of the County Board.

The Recorder’s office maintains the index and records of all property transactions. All real estate documents, corporation papers, city and village ordinances, tax liens, both federal and state and other miscellaneous documents, together with all members’ of the service separation and discharge papers, are recorded.

Certified copies are available of birth and death records of persons who were born or who died in Jo Daviess County. Requests should include the person’s name at birth or at death, the date of the birth or death, the place (town) where the event occurred, and a fee, depending on the certificate you wish to get. Because of the confidential nature of these records, Illinois Statutes provide that copies of these records may only be taken by eligible individuals.
