Coles County, Illinois
Coles County is a county located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed on December 25, 1830, out of Clark and Edgar counties and named after Edward Coles, the second governor of Illinois (1822 – 1826). Charleston is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 53,873 and a total area of 510 square miles, of which 1.8 square miles is water and 508 square miles is land. Coles County borders the following counties: Douglas County to the north, Edgar County to the northeast, Clark County to the southeast, Cumberland County to the south, Shelby County to the southwest, and Moultrie County to the west.
