Madison County, Idaho Overview

Madison County is located in the U.S. state of Idaho. The county was formed in 1913 and named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. The county seat is Rexburg. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 37,450 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 473 square miles, of which 469 square miles is land and 4.0 square miles is water. It is the third-smallest county in Idaho by area. Madison County borders the following counties: Fremont County to the north; Teton County to the east; Bonneville County to the south; and Jefferson County to the west. Madison County has eight zip codes. The zip codes are 83434, 83436, 83440, 83460, 83443, 83445, 83448, and 83451. The most populated zip code is 83340.

Madison County Clerk’s Office Information

The County Clerk has one of the most diverse jobs of all county elected officials. According to constitutional and statutory laws, the County Clerk has five distinct titles:

  • Clerk of the District Court;
  • Auditor;
  • Recorder;
  • Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners; and
  • Chief Elections Officer of the County

The County Clerk also commands the County Assistance and Veteran Services office. There are over 14 deputy clerks working in the various departments under the Clerk as well as in the Board of County Commissioners Office of Madison County. As Auditor, the County Clerk is responsible to prepare the annual county budget for the Board of County Commissioners. As the Chief Election Official of Madison County, the Clerk is responsible for voter registration and administering all elections within the county. The Clerk is also responsible for issuing marriage licenses, liquor licenses, birth/death certification, and processes passports.

Madison County Assessor’s Office Information

The duties of the Assessor are to identify taxable property within the county and assign a market value to each of them for collecting property tax. The Assessor also acts an agent of the Idaho Transportation Department in titling and registration of motor vehicles.

Madison County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Madison County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
