Kootenai County, Idaho Overview
Kootenai County is located in the U.S. state of Idaho. The county was formed in 1864 and named after the local Kootenai tribe. The county seat is Coeur d’Alene. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 144,265 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,316 square miles of which 1,244 square miles is land and 71 square miles is water. Kootenai County borders the following counties: Bonner County to the north; Shoshone County to the east; Benewah County to the south; and Spokane County, Washington to the west. Kootenai County Clerk’s Office Information
The County Clerk has one of the most diverse jobs of all county elected officials. In fact, constitutional and statutory laws have given this one elective county officer five distinct titles: Clerk of the District Court, Auditor, Recorder, Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, and Chief Elections Officer of the County.
Auditor
The auditor acts as the county budget officer. The auditor’s office executes this responsibility by compiling the budget requests and submitting the budget to the board of commissioners. In the role of Auditor, the Clerk’s office is responsible to prepare the annual county budget for the Board of County Commissioners. The Auditor’s office also notifies every taxing district or authority as well as the State Board of Education of the total taxable valuation of all the taxable property located within each taxing district.
Elections
The Clerk is the Chief Elections Officer for the county. The office is responsible for registering voters, maintaining a database of registered voters, and conducting all county, state and national elections.
Passports
The Passports Office is an executing agent for passports.
Court Operations
The Clerk provides clerical support for the courts and is responsible for the processing and maintenance of all court case filings. This office provides in-court clerks who support judges in the commission of their duties.
Indigent Services
The Indigent Services office carries out the mandates of Idaho Code Chapter 35, Title 31 external.
Recorder
This Office primarily records documents related to property, but also issues local liquor licenses and marriage licenses.
