Custer County, Idaho Overview
Custer County is located in the U.S. state of Idaho. The county was formed in 1881. The county was named for the General Custer Mine, where gold was discovered five years earlier. The county seat is Challis. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 1,042 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,937 square miles, of which 4,721 square miles is land and 16 square miles is water. It is the third-largest county in Idaho by area. Custer County borders the following counties: Lemhi County to the north; Butte County to the east; Blaine County to the south; Elmore County to the southwest; Boise County to the southwest; and Valley County to the west. Custer County has seven zip codes. The zip codes are 83226, 83227, 83235, 83251, 83253, 83255, and 83278. The most populated zip code is 83226.
Custer County Clerk’s Office Information
The County Clerk is an elected official of the county and holds five titles: Clerk of the District Court, Auditor, Recorder, Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, and Chief Elections Officer of the County. The County Clerk also oversees County Assistance. Several deputies assist the clerk in carrying his/her responsibilities.
The Auditor acts as the County Budget and Accounting Officer and is responsible for compiling the budget requests and submitting the budget to the Board of County Commissioners. The Auditor also keeps accounting records on the revenues, expenditures, and balances in each county fund; prepares and remits checks to employees, vendors, and all others entitled to payment. As the Chief Election Officer, the County Clerk registers voters and conducts all elections in the county.
The Recorder is responsible to keep records of all documents recorded in Custer County. The Recorder’s office provides marriage licenses, liquor licenses, birth/death certificates, processes passport applications, and records all land documents, including plat maps, surveys, liens, etc.
