Hawaiʻi County is located in the state of Hawaii in the Hawaiian Islands. The county was formed in 1905, and its county seat is Hilo. It is coterminous with the Island of Hawaiʻi, to distinguish it from the state as a whole. There are no incorporated cities in Hawaiʻi County. Hawaiʻi County has a population of approximately 185,093 people and a total area of 5,086.70 square miles, of which 1,058.69 square miles is water and 4,028.02 square miles is land. Hawaii County is one of seven counties in the United States to share the same name as the state in which it is located.
