Lowndes County, Georgia

Lowndes County is located in the state of Georgia. The county was created on December 23, 1825, by an act passed by the Georgia legislature and named after William Jones Lowndes, a prominent South Carolina lawyer and Congressman. Valdosta is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to a census done in 2010 by the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 109,232 people and a total area of 511 square miles, of which 496 square miles is land and 15 square miles is water. Lowndes County borders the following counties: Berrien County to the north; Lanier County to the northeast; Echols County to the east; Hamilton County, Florida, to the southeast; Madison County, Florida, to the southwest; Brooks County to the west; and Cook County to the northwest.
