Houston County, Georgia

Houston County is located in the state of Georgia. The county was created on May 15, 1821, as one of five counties in the state, and named after Georgia governor John Houstoun, with the spelling being a common 19th-century variation. After being formed, the county was reduced in size with the formation of Bibb, Crawford, Pike, Macon, and Peach counties. Warner Robins is the largest city in the county, while the county seat is Perry. According to the U.S. Census in 2010, the county has a population of approximately 139,900 people and a total area of 380 square miles, of which 4.4 square miles is water and 376 square miles is land.

The Probate Court of Houston County is charged with the responsibility of filing, maintaining, and issuing birth and death records in the county. Birth certificates are not public record; therefore only specific people can apply to receive a certified copy of birth records. These include persons listed on the birth certificate, parents, grandparents, siblings, or the spouse of the person on the birth certificate. Death certificates are available to the public. However, the law prohibits the release of confidential medical information to the public with the exception of the next of kin and other authorized persons.

Vital records can be obtained by doing a background check online or by mail. To access vital records online, you will have to use an independent company, VitalChek, which is partnering with the Houston County Probate Court to provide the public with this service. It is important to note that an additional fee is charged by VitalChek for using this service. You can also request vital records through the mail. You will be required to mail a written request with the following details: name as it should appear on the birth certificate, date of birth, mother’s name, father’s name, a self-addressed stamped envelope, the number of records you are requesting, and a money order or check.
