Coweta County, Georgia

Coweta County is located in the state of Georgia. The county’s boundaries were formed on June 9, 1826, by the Georgia General Assembly, but it was not named until December 14, 1826. The county was named after the Koweta Indians, who had several towns in and around present day Coweta. Newnan is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 127,317 people and a total area of 446 square miles, of which 4.9 square miles is water and 441 square miles is land. Coweta County borders the following counties: Fulton County to the northeast, Fayette County to the east, Spalding County to the southeast, Meriwether County to the south, Troup County to the southwest, Heard County to the west, and Carroll County to the northwest.

The Clerk of Court is a Constitutional Officer, elected to serve a four-year term. The Clerk is responsible for maintaining the titles to all property and recording deeds in the county. In addition, the clerk records military discharges, as well as business and trade names, and appoints notaries. The Clerk also manages all revenue collections and disbursements for the Superior and Juvenile Courts as prescribed by law.

In order to obtain a marriage license in Coweta County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
