Clayton County is located in the state of Georgia. The county was formed in November 30, 1858 and named after Augustin Smith Clayton. The county seat is Jonesboro. As of 2017, the county has a population of 285,153. The county has a total area of 144 square miles, 142 square miles of which is land, and 2.8 square miles is water. The county consists of 16 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 30236 recorded as the one with the largest population. Clayton County borders the following counties: Spalding County, Georgia to the south; Henry County, Georgia to the east; DeKalb County, Georgia to the northeast; Fulton County, Georgia to the northwest, and; Fayette County, Georgia to the southwest.

Clayton Tax Assessor Information

IAAO Member The Tax Assessor’s Office is responsible for the preparation of the annual real and personal property tax digest in compliance with the taxation laws of the state. In order to meet State Mandated Digest Requirements, the Tax Assessor’s Office must review annually all property. The following information is furnished by the Clayton County Board of Tax Assessors and is not intended to be a statement of law. It is solely for the purpose of assisting Clayton County property owners. The Board of Tax Assessors, an independent body appointed by the Board of Commissioners, is responsible for placing a fair and equalized value on all taxable property.

The Board of Tax Assessors’ is responsible for handling the following applications

  • Inventory Freeport Exemption
  • Conservation Use.

In accordance with Georgia Law (OCGA 48-5-264.1), please be advised that a member of the Clayton County Appraisal Staff may visit your property to review or update property information. The purpose of this visit may be in response to one or more of the following: a return was filed, an appeal was filed, recent improvements or additions were made to the property, a change in zoning, a general review/update of parcel information, exempt property application, and conservation use application. The field appraiser will have a photo identification badge and will be driving an appropriately marked vehicle.
