Clarke County, Georgia

Clarke County is located in the state of Georgia; the county was formed on December 5, 1801, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly and included 250 square miles that were formerly part of Jackson County. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Elijah Clarke. Athens is the country seat, with which it is a consolidated city-county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 116,714 people and a total area of 121 square miles, of which 1.8 square miles is water and 119 square miles is land, making it the smallest county by area in Georgia. Clarke County borders the following counties:  Madison County to the northeast, Oglethorpe County to the southeast, Oconee County to the southwest, Barrow County to the west, and Jackson County to the northwest.

The Clarke County Clerk of Superior and State Courts is charged with the responsibility of maintaining records in the county. Some of the records maintained by the office include but are not limited to: civil records, criminal records, real and personal property records, and military discharge records.

Clarke County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Clarke County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
