Barrow County, Georgia
Barrow County is located in the state of Georgia. The county was formed on July 7, 1914, from parts of Jackson County, Gwinnett County, and Walton County and named after David Crenshaw Barrow, Jr., alumnus, professor, and chancellor of the University of Georgia. The county seat is Winder. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 69,367 people and a total area of 163 square miles, of which 2.6 square miles is water and 160 square miles is land. Barrow County borders the following counties: Hall County to the north, Clarke County to the east, Jackson County to the east, Oconee County to the southeast, Walton County to the south, and Gwinnett County to the west.
The Barrow County Probate Court Judge is elected for a four year term. The office is responsible for probating wills, performing marriage ceremonies, issuing marriage licenses, and appointing guardians of minors and incompetent persons. In addition, the Probate Court maintains birth records, marriage records, and death records as the state appointed custodian of vital records for the county. The County Clerk also serves as clerk to the Board of County Commissioners, maintains county records such as contracts, and responds to open record requests. The County Clerk is recommended by the County Manager and appointed by the Board of County Commissioners.
