Lake County is located in central Florida, north and west of Orlando. Its northeastern border is formed by the St. Johns River. Created in 1887 from parts of Sumter and Orange counties, it was named for its lakes: there are more than 1,400 in the county’s 1,157 square miles, of which almost 19% is covered by water.
