Highlands County is located in the state of Florida. The county was created on April 23, 1921, along with Hardee, Charlotte, and Glades, when they were separated from DeSoto County. The county was named after the terrain of the county. Sebring is the largest city in the county and the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 98,786 and a total area of 1,106 square miles, of which 89 square miles is water and 1,017 square miles is land, making it the 14th largest county in Florida by area. Highlands County borders the following counties: Osceola County to the northeast, Okeechobee County to the east, Glades County to the south, Charlotte County to the southwest, DeSoto County to the west, Hardee County to the west, and Polk County to the north.
