Charlotte County is located in the state of Florida; the county was established on April 23, 1921, and named after the Bay of Charlotte Harbor. Its county seat is Punta Gorda, Florida. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 159,978 people and a total area of 858 square miles. Charlotte County borders the following counties: Sarasota County to the northwest, DeSoto County to the north, Highlands County to the northeast, Glades County to the east, Hendry County to the southeast and Lee County to the south.
