Prowers County is located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The county was formed in 1889 and named after John W. Prowers, a pioneer of the Arkansas River valley. The county seat is Lamar. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 12,291 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,644 square miles, of which 1,638 square miles is land and 5.9 square miles is water. Prowers County borders the following counties: Kiowa County to the north; Greeley County, Kansas to the northeast; Hamilton County, Kansas to the east; Stanton County, Kansas to the southeast; Baca County to the south; and Bent County to the west.
