Montrose County is located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The county was formed in 1883 and named after the town of Montrose, which was taken from the novel A Legend of Montrose, published in 1819 by Walter Scott. The county seat is Montrose. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 40,713 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,243 square miles, of which 2,241 square miles is land and 1.9 square miles is water. Montrose County borders the following counties: Mesa County to the north; Delta County to the northeast; Gunnison County to the east; Ouray County to the southeast; San Miguel County to the south; and San Juan County, Utah to the west. The Clerk and Recorder’s Office is responsible for issuing and recording marriage licenses, issuing liquor licenses, motor vehicle registrations and titling, issuing license plates, issuing birth and death certificates, and recording all real estate transactions.
