Montezuma County is located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The county was formed in 1889 and named after Aztec leader Moctezuma II. The county seat is Cortez. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 25,642 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,040 square miles, of which 2,030 square miles is land and 11 square miles is water. Montezuma County borders the following counties: Dolores County to the north; San Juan County to the northeast; La Plata County to the east; San Juan County, New Mexico to the south; Apache County, Arizona to the southwest; and San Juan County, Utah to the west. Montezuma County Clerk and Recorder Office Information
The County Clerk and Recorder is responsible for executing state laws relating to motor vehicles, motor vehicle registration, and certification of automobile titles. The Clerk is also the Chief Election Official of the county and is responsible for conducting all primary, general, and special elections held in the county. The Clerk is also responsible for registration of voters, publishing notice of elections held in the county, appointing election judges and printing and distributing ballots. The Clerk also issues marriage licenses, registers birth and death records, issues liquor licenses, and maintains records and books for the Board of County Commissioners. The Clerk is the ex-officio Recorder of Deeds and is responsible for the safekeeping of all public records associated with the office. The Recording Department of Montezuma County is responsible for recording and maintaining deeds, deed of trust, mortgage, releases, mining documents, and other legal documents. The recording fee for deeds, deed of trust, mortgages and most other documents has been fixed at $13.00 for the first page and $5.00 for each additional page.
