Morgan County, Colorado Overview

Morgan County is located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The county was formed in 1889 and named after the Fort Morgan, which in turn was named in honor of U.S. Army Colonel Christopher A. Morgan. The county seat is Fort Morgan. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 28,404 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,294 square miles, of which 1,280 square miles is land and 13 square miles is water. Morgan County borders the following counties: Logan County to the northeast; Washington County to the east, southeast; Adams County to the southwest; and Weld County to the west. Morgan County Clerk and Recorder Office Information

The responsibilities of the County Clerk and Recorder is issuing and recording marriage licenses, issuing civil union licenses, issuing liquor licenses, motor vehicle registrations and titling, and issuing license plates. The Clerk and Recorder’s Office is also responsible for registering voters and conducting all primary, general, and county elections. The Clerk and Recorder’s Office is also responsible for recording and maintaining documents related to deeds, deed of trust, mortgage, releases, mining documents, etc. for public records purposes. The Clerk and Recorder is the official keeper of the records and the Seal of the Morgan County Circuit Court. The clerk is responsible for attending all sessions of the court, maintain all the files and documents, and make, keep, and preserve complete records of all the proceedings and determinations except for cases that are exempt by law or by the court.

The duties of the Recording Department include the recording, indexing, and maintenance of permanent public records. The recording fee for deed, deed of trust, mortgage and most other documents has been fixed at $13.00 for the first page and $5.00 for each additional page.
