The county was formed in 1877 and named after George Armstrong Custer, the U.S. Army colonel defeated and killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The county seat is Westcliffe. Custer County Clerk and Recorder Office Information

The Clerk and Recorder serve as the Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners of the county, issues marriage licenses and certificates, military discharge papers, liquor licenses, titling of motor vehicles, and motor vehicles registrations. The Clerk and Recorder is also the Chief Elections Officer for the county. The Clerk and Recorder is the recorder of deeds, record real estate titles, judgments, liens, easements, federal tax liens, certificates of incorporation, inheritance tax liens, decrees, and other legal documents.
