Conejos County is located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The county was formed in 1861 and named after the cottontail rabbits in the area. Rabbits are called “Conejos” in Spanish. The county seat is Conejos. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 8,277 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,291 square miles, of which 1,287 square miles is land and 3.6 square miles is water. Conejos County borders the following counties: Rio Grande County to the north; Alamosa County to the northeast; Costilla County to the east Taos County, New Mexico to the southeast; Rio Arriba County, New Mexico to the south; and Archuleta County to the west.
