Santa Barbara County, California

Santa Barbara County lies on the Pacific coast in the southern region of California. The county seat, also known as Santa Barbara, was established in 1782 by the Spanish, and the county was established upon statehood in 1850. The county covers an area of 3,789 square miles, of which over a fourth is covered by water between the mainland and the four Channel Islands that lie within the boundaries of the county. Away from the coastal plain, the county is very mountainous.

The Santa Barbara County Recorder’s main responsibility is to maintain a permanent archive of recorded documents such as subdivision maps, grants, and deeds. The Recorder is responsible for examination and recording of all documents he is presented that relate to establishing ownership of land in the county or as required by law. In addition, the county recorder also archives and provides copies of official records and vital records (birth, death and marriage certificates); files maps related to real property, notary public oaths, and fictitious business name statements; issues marriage licenses; and files domestic partnerships. Official records are recorded, scanned, indexed and stored.  Joseph E. Holland is the county Clerk, Recorder, Assessor and Registrar of Voters as of 2015.

The public is allowed to search, view, and copy public records for a fee, as allowed by law. Public records can be obtained by doing a search online or by visiting the recorder’s office in person. To do a public records search online, you will have to access the Santa Barbara County Recorder’s Website. The website has easy to follow steps and links that will direct you to the records that are available online.

The other way to obtain public records is by visiting the county recorder’s office in person. You will be required to download and fill out the records request form; on the form, remember to indicate the exact records you are requesting to reduce the search time. You will be charged a small fee for obtaining public records; the fee schedule is indicated on the county recorder’s website. Alternatively, you can call the recorder’s office at (805) 568-2250; although you cannot access public records by phone, it is a sure way to obtain information on public records.
