Santa Barbara County lies on the Pacific coast in the southern region of California. The county seat, also known as Santa Barbara, was established in 1782 by the Spanish, and the county was established upon statehood in 1850. The county covers an area of 3,789 square miles, of which over a fourth is covered by water between the mainland and the four Channel Islands that lie within the boundaries of the county. Away from the coastal plain, the county is very mountainous.

The Santa Barbara County Recorder’s main responsibility is to maintain a permanent archive of recorded documents such as subdivision maps, grants, and deeds. The Recorder is responsible for examination and recording of all documents he is presented that relate to establishing ownership of land in the county or as required by law. In addition, the county recorder also archives and provides copies of official records and vital records (birth, death and marriage certificates); files maps related to real property, notary public oaths, and fictitious business name statements; issues marriage licenses; and files domestic partnerships.
