Nevada County, California

Nevada County was established in California in 1851. It takes its name from the county seat, Navada City, which was named for the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The state of Nevada, which borders the county on the east, was named ten years later. The region saw a boom during the California Gold Rush, beginning in 1849. The population is 98,764.

The Nevada County Clerk is responsible for recording liens, mortgages, deeds, surety bonds, and other orders and instruments which involve property within the county. The office of the Assessor is accountable for locating taxable property, identifying its owner, establishing its value and then publishing this information in the assessment rolls. 

The county clerk strives to provide public records in a transparent manner; this includes timely access to requested public records. According to the California Public Records Act, public records include any written document containing information relating to the conduct of the public’s business which is prepared, owned, used, or retained by Nevada County, subject to certain exceptions. Upon reasonable request during office hours, public records are open to inspection by the general public.

To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Nevada County Clerk Website. While on the website, click on the relevant link and follow the steps to access records that are available online. For records that cannot be accessed online, you will have to visit the clerk’s office in person. You will be required to fill out the records request form; your request must reasonably describe an identifiable record or records. The clerk’s office will review the form, and you will receive the requested public records within 10 business days after making your request. When requesting public records, you will be charged a fee which you will have to pay prior to the records being released, if you are requesting a hard copy of a document. However, there may be additional charges for programming costs and storage devices for documents provided in certain electronic formats.
