Monterey County is located on the Pacific Coast of the state of California; the county was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. The area was originally populated by Ohlone, Salinan & Esselen tribes. Parts of the county were given to San Benito County in 1874. The county seat and largest city is Salinas. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 415,057 people and a total area of 3,771 square miles. The county is roughly similar in population and size to Santa Barbara County and roughly 1.5 times larger than the state of Delaware.

The County Assessor-Clerk-Recorder’s duties include recording, indexing, and preserving of permanent documents, primarily real estate records. In addition, the recorder’s office also maintains real property records which consist of liens, mortgages, deeds, judgments, and anything pertaining to property in Monterey County. With the exception of military discharges, all recorded documents are public record.
