Monterey County, California

Monterey County is located on the Pacific Coast of the state of California; the county was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. The area was originally populated by Ohlone, Salinan & Esselen tribes. Parts of the county were given to San Benito County in 1874. The county seat and largest city is Salinas. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 415,057 people and a total area of 3,771 square miles. The county is roughly similar in population and size to Santa Barbara County and roughly 1.5 times larger than the state of Delaware.

Stephen L. Vagnini is the Monterey County Assessor-Clerk-Recorder as of 2015. The County Assessor-Clerk-Recorder’s duties include recording, indexing, and preserving of permanent documents, primarily real estate records. In addition, the recorder’s office also maintains real property records which consist of liens, mortgages, deeds, judgments, and anything pertaining to property in Monterey County.  With the exception of military discharges, all recorded documents are public record.

The Court provides electronic access to court records, when feasible. Access to online public court records save the public time and also promotes efficiency with court operations.

When requesting a court record search, the clerk will conduct up to three searches in person; if you have more than three searches, you will have to give the clerk more time (up to 72 hours) to process your request. You will also need to provide the following information for the records you want to obtain: the case number, case name/caption, and any information available information available that will assist the clerk with identifying the case. When requesting a court record by mail, the request must be made in writing with the submission of a Request for a Record Search form.  You will be charged for requesting public records; refer to Court Local Fee Schedule for more information on the applicable fee.
