Inyo County, California Overview
Inyo County is located in the state of California. The county was formed in March 22, 1866 and named after the “dwelling place of the great spirit” in Mono language. The county seat is Independence. As of 2013, the county has a population of 18467. The county has a total area of 10227 square miles, 10181 square miles of which is land, and 46 square miles is water. Inyo County borders the following counties: Mono County, CA to the north; San Bernardino County, CA to the south; Nye County, NV to the east; Tulare County, CA to the west; Esmeralda County, NV to the northeast; Fresno County, CA to the northwest; Kern County, CA to the southwest, and; Clark County, NV to the southeast.

The County Recorder manages and protects public records including records related to land ownership and records of birth, death and marriage. Their office also keeps a record of birth and death certificates for all citizens born/died in Inyo County since 1900.

There are three ways to order a certified copy of birth and death certificates: either online, by going to VitalChek, or by mail, using a form/application for an authorized certified copy of a Birth/Death Certificate, where you’ll have to include money or a check ($25 for Birth Certificates, $21 for Death Certificates), or by person, in which you’ll have to go to their office personally to pick it up.
