Named after its location, “Of the North” (Spanish: Del norte), in California, the county was formed in March 2, 1857 and its county seat is Crescent City. The county has a total population of 27873, as of 2013, with its area spanning 1230 square miles (land area being 1006 square miles, while water area being 223 square miles). Del Norte County borders the following counties: Curry County, OR to the north; Humboldt County, to the south; Siskiyou County, CA to the east; the Pacific Ocean to the west, and; Josephine County, OR to the northeast.
