Sonoma County is located in the state of California. Named after the city of Sonoma, the county was formed in February 18, 1850 and its county seat is Santa Rosa. The county has a total population of 495025, as of 2013, with its area spanning 1768 square miles (land area being 1576 square miles, while water area being 192 square miles). The county consists of 36 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 95403 recorded as the one with the largest population. Sonoma County borders the following counties: Mendocino County, CA to the north; Marin County, CA to the south; Napa County, CA to the east; Lake County, CA to the northeast, and; Solano and Contra Costa County, CA to the southeast.

Sonoma County Clerk Information

The County Clerk’s Office issues marriage licenses, filing fictitious business name statements, processing notary bonds, handles environmental documents, and performs civil marriage ceremonies. The County Clerk Division also issues certified copies of marriage, birth and death records on behalf of the County Recorder. The Recorder’s Office, on the other hand, maintains various land and finance documents for Sonoma County.

The Sonoma County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor does offer an online Index of Official Public Records recorded from 1964 to the present. You can search this online index to locate documents that can be reviewed and purchased by visiting their office in Santa Rosa. Documents recorded prior to 1964 (going back to 1835) are not indexed online, but are indexed in handwritten volumes which can be examined in their office at no cost. We also have a cumulative map index in their office for subdivision maps, parcel maps, surveys and assessment districts. All recorded documents are indexed by the names of the principal parties. To locate a document in the indexes, you will need to know the name of at least one party and the approximate year the document was recorded.
