Named after Mount Shasta, which was in turn named after the Shasta people, the county was formed in 1850 and its county seat is Redding. The county has a total population of 178980, as of 2013, with its area spanning 3847 square miles (land area being 3775 square miles, while water area being 72 square miles). Shasta County Clerk Information
The Recorder, upon payment of the proper fees and taxes, accepts for recordation any instrument, paper, or notice which is authorized or required by law to be recorded. The Recorder maintains and indexes the vital records of birth, death, and marriage certificates.
An Official Records Database Inquiry is available at the website. There are three methods of searching the Official Records Database, either alphabetically by names of parties identified on the documents, or document number, or document type/title. To obtain a certified copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate by coming to the Recorder’s office or by mail you must be an authorized applicant. Submit your request with your check/money order in the amount of $28.00 payable to the Shasta County Recorder – do not send cash. Vital records can also be ordered online thru a third-party website.

The County Clerk serves the public as licenser of marriage licenses, filer of fictitious business name statements, and is an authorized passport acceptance agent in Shasta County.
Marriage License applications are processed in the County Clerk’s Office at 1643 Market Street, in Redding, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for processing time. Payment may be made by cash, preprinted checks, or money orders made payable to Shasta County Clerk. Credit or debit cards are also accepted with additional convenience fee. Both parties must appear in person and present their current ID containing their picture, birth date, and signature. Once the Marriage License has been issued and the couple leave the office, no information can be changed, verify all the information is correct before leaving the office.
