San Mateo County, California

San Mateo County was formed in 1856 from part of San Francisco County. The name San Mateo comes from the Spanish name for St. Matthew. The county comprises 741 square miles, 40% of which is covered by water, including part of San Francisco Bay. The population is 718,451, and the county seat is Redwood City.

The San Mateo County Recorder’s Division is responsible for maintaining archives of documents relating to legally recordable transactions of events. Documents are recorded, digitally archived, indexed, and later made public to the county residents. Some of the records maintained by the recorder division include but are not limited to:

  • Deeds
  • Mortgages
  • Court Decrees
  • Liens & Releases
  • Other documents that affect title to real property

Once a document has been recorded, the document becomes part of the public records of the County Recorder. Through the recorder’s division, the public can access the records. These records can be accessed by doing a search online or by visiting the recorder’s division in person.

To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the San Mateo County Recorder’s Website. While on the website, click on the relevant link to access the records that are available. The county recorder presents the information on the website as a service to the public. Though the recorder’s division tries its best to ensure that information on the website is accurate, it does not warrant or guarantee the accuracy of the content on the website.

For the records that cannot be accessed online, you will have to visit the recorder’s division in person. You will be required to fill out the records request form before you are served. The form will indicate your personal information and the kind of records you are requesting. Remember to visit the recorder’s website to view the fee schedule applicable when requesting public records. You can also call the recorder’s division at (650) 363-1903 and make enquiries regarding public records.

@CalMatters highlights what we're seeing in our own #community. Neighbors starting food businesses bc of lost jobs in the service industry. Others doing money pools & raffles to help pay the bills.
