San Mateo County, California

San Mateo County was formed in 1856 from part of San Francisco County. The name San Mateo comes from the Spanish name for St. Matthew. The county comprises 741 square miles, 40% of which is covered by water, including part of San Francisco Bay. The population is 718,451, and the county seat is Redwood City.

The San Mateo County Recorder’s Division is responsible for maintaining archives of documents relating to legally recordable transactions of events.
