San Luis Obispo County, California

San Luis Obispo County is a county located in the state of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. The county seat is San Luis Obispo. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 269,637 people and a total area of 3,616 square miles. The county is made up of the following cities: Grover Beach, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo (county seat), Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Morro Bay, and Pismo Beach.

The San Luis Obispo County clerk-recorder has the responsibility of maintaining records in the county. Records maintained by the clerk-recorder’s office include–but are not limited to–birth records, marriage records, death records, mining notices, subdivision plats, surveys, personal property related documents, tax liens, deeds of trust, family trusts, real estate transactions, and mortgages.

Public records can be accessed by mail, in person, or by doing an online search. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the San Luis Obispo County Clerk Website. The website has an official record index from the year 1970 to the current date. The index is updated nightly.

Some records cannot be obtained online; these include the complete index (from 1850 to current) and images of the documents. These records can only be viewed by visiting the clerk’s office in person at either the San Luis Obispo or Atascadero office. You will be required to submit a records request form, after which you will be served within about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of the order. However, for large copies there may be a one day or more turnaround.

When requesting public records by mail, you will be required to send the records request form along with a money order or check made payable to SLO County Clerk-Recorder. Remember to include a self-addressed stamped envelope, and mail the above documents to:

Seriously? Your voicemail says that you're closed today in observation of Columbus Day; however, as of last year, SLO officially recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day instead. Horribly offensive and very disappointed. Please rectify.
